Worcester Porcelain – Transformation of Grade II Works

Worcester Porcelain is an independent charitable trust to care for and connect people with, the largest collection of Worcester Porcelain and design archives in the world.

We provided Quantity Surveying services for The Bransford Trust c/o Royal Porcelain Works Ltd.

The Grade II site, at the same location where manufacturing started in 1751, has been transformed to include an events venue, flexible office space, café and retail units, new town houses and apartments. Within the grounds, landscaped areas and new public spaces have been created.

Challenges

The project faced significant challenges including limited site access arrangements due to the city centre location and adjacent school. The brief required reusing as many existing materials as possible, for authenticity and reduced cost and carbon impact.

The Solution

A bespoke scaffolding system was designed to work within the very limited space available and not impact the existing highway. Deliveries to site were carefully scheduled to avoid issues for local school and surrounding businesses.

Positive Impact

The brickwork and roof tiles were methodically taken down, cleaned and then reused. Timber flooring was salvaged from the Kings School adjacent saving circa 500m2 of new timber flooring. Timber glulam beams were used in lieu of steel or concrete within the bar and foyer extension area, reducing the carbon footprint of the scheme further.
