How do you decarbonise some of the UK’s busiest hospitals without disrupting the care being delivered inside them?
That’s the challenge facing Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust. As part of its wider plan to reduce carbon emissions across its estate, the Trust is investing £9.2 million to upgrade lighting infrastructure across five live hospital sites, replacing ageing systems with energy-efficient LED technology and modern emergency lighting.
The programme began in April 2026 and is scheduled for completion in August 2027 under a JCT Standard Form of Contract.
Spanning Basildon, Broomfield, Southend, St Andrew’s and St Michael’s hospitals, the programme is reducing energy consumption, cutting carbon emissions and improving reliability across the estate. More than a lighting upgrade, it represents an important step towards creating a more sustainable, resilient and efficient healthcare environment for patients, staff and visitors.
