The Box transforms the previous City Museum and Art Gallery into a cutting-edge, interactive centre three times its previous size. It provides a new home for the city’s most fascinating historic collections.

The construction involved refurbishment of listed buildings as well as substantial new build elements. This included the refurbishment of St Luke’s Church, and the creation of a new public square for gigs, performance, theatre and events was also part of this major development. A major component of the project was the use of local materials, people, and the significant use of solar and rainwater technologies to reduce its carbon footprint.

The Box is an integral part of the social and economic success of Plymouth, attracting visitors and providing a hub for education and learning.

This ‘civic gem’ was awarded Michelmores ‘Building of the Year’.
